November 10th, 2009 - SLUG Meeting DiGISt

The second Salt Lake GIS Users Group (SLUG) meeting was held on November 10, 2009, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Sandy City Hall. Drinks were provided by ESRI and a nice box lunch was provided by Azteca catered by Jason’s Deli.

We had 118 RSVP for the lunch, and had about 140 in attendance. This was a wonderful turnout!

Business:

      • Azteca (makers of Cityworks) and Forsgren Associates (who provided the food last time) were each given a few minutes to explain the services they offer.

      • An update was given about the LOGO Contest ($50 prize!). We are still looking for more logos, created by you, to have enough to choose from. Ideas so far include varieties of garden slugs or a fist punching through maybe a map. (Note that the cute yellow banana slug commonly available online is copyright by a university sports team, so we can’t use it.) Please send digital submissions to ttoronto ‘at’ forsgren ‘dot’ com ASAP. We will have online voting for the best logo sometime in the future.

      • Kevin Sato gave an update about the combined UGIC/SWUG conference to be held in Moab April 19-23rd, 2010.

Presentations:

Cindy Clark, AGRC - Vanishing History/Saving Geospatial Data

Cindy spoke about the need to preserve our old Geospatial data. There is an effort underway to permanently archive this through a State archival effort. This isn’t just storing old tapes or CD’s of data. Formats change over time; for the archived data to be useful it must be kept converted to the current format. For more info, contact Cindy at AGRC. Her presentation materials are available below.

Joe Borgione, VECC - Database Replication and Internet Map Applications

Joe demonstrated the core concepts of database replication, discussed the ability for additional fields to be added at the child replica that are not shared at the parent. He also demonstrated the ESRI out-of-the-box methods used to create published GIS resources and internet map applications. Joe’s presentation materials are available below.
