February 10th, 2010 - SLUG Meeting DiGISt

The third Salt Lake GIS Users Group (SLUG) meeting was held on February 10, 2010, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Sandy City Hall.  Drinks were provided by Forsgren Associates and a nice box lunch was provided by Aero-Graphics catered by Jason’s Deli.

Our biggest turnout yet with 150 attendees!

§        Thanks was given to our sponsors Aero-Graphics for providing lunch, and Forsgren for providing drinks.

§        An update was given about the LOGO Contest.  Since the February meeting we have received a number of submissions, and a survey of the Logo’s is currently being conducted.

§        Welcome our newest board member, Michael Duncan.

Matt Coleman, Aero-Graphics Flight Operations Manager

Matt showed a video of the process of acquiring digital photography, as well as LiDAR.  The video consisted of an overview of flight logistics, planning and execution with both film and digital cameras.

Casey Francis, CP, Aero-Graphics – General Manager

Casey went over some definitions and terminology used in the industry.  He then gave an overview of LiDAR, what it is and why it is useful.  He also discussed digital versus film photography.

Kelly Francis, CP, Aero-Graphics – Marketing Director

Kelly focused on what to include in an ortho imagery/LiDAR RFP.  He stressed the importance to know what you want and to be specific with your vendor contracts.  If you don’t specify exactly what you want then contractors might skimp on the quality of the product you receive.  There are different qualities of “6 inch” pixel imagery, and some ways are cheaper to acquire.  He demonstrated this with an example with varying altitudes taking “6 inch” imagery.

The results are in.  The winner for the Photo Quiz is...  Shawn Frye of HDR Engineering.  Congratulations Shawn!

To our presenters and our sponsors, “Thank you!”

An after-meeting survey was sent out to all attendees.
